Addiction

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), about 20 million people in the United States suffer from a substance use disorder. Of those, about 2 million have an addiction to opioids. Substance abuse costs the U.S. economy about $740 billion each year in lost productivity, healthcare costs, and criminal justice costs.

If you are experiencing the psychological or physical urge to use a chemical, substance, or drug that is causing you harm, you may be suffering from addiction. What is a Substance Use Disorder?

A substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite negative consequences. SUDs include disorders that used to be called alcoholism and drug addiction. People with SUDs have an intense focus on using a certain substance(s), such as alcohol or drugs, to the point that it takes over their lives. They keep using it even though it causes problems in their relationships, at work, and/or physically. The most severe SUDs are sometimes called addictions.
